Legislation has a tendency to act as a millstone around the neck of management. But you ignore compliance at your peril. Compliance generally falls into two groups – that which you have to do and which brings you an extra burden and probably costs; and that which can actually save you money or that you frankly should be doing anyway as responsible managers.

The former may include some machine guarding, environmental, health & safety, labour legislation, union activity, and so on.

The latter may include some environmental legislation, employee rights, and also H & S matters.

While much of it seems to be a nuisance (and frequently is!) compliance is a must, and, viewed positively, can on occasion be turned into an advantage for the company.
